Polyphono – Copa de Agua

arquitectura / arte sonoro

Polyphono is an instrument that dialogues with space through sound. The term is derived from two Greek words; poly meaning many and phono meaning sound, evoking a system with multiple audible extremities. The project harnesses principles of echolocation and acousmatics to establish a system of communication with space. The aim is to foster a sound-spatial dialogue through the sonic reaction of space, allowing for an auditory exploration of the principles that shape spatial environments through listening experiences, showcased in a site-specific sound performance. The system becomes an instrument that is played by the space, creating compositions that are modulated through the spatial morphologies. Polyphono comprises a system of 10 loudspeakers, each one of them speaking with a specific part of the space. It is a site-specific installation, so the exact disposition of the speakers depends on the site where the system will be placed. The speakers may be static or in motion. In the case of motion, the speakers will be suspended by pulleys, allowing both vertical and horizontal movement. To visualize the communication with space, the system usually controls a laser shaft, created by media artist Mauricio Lacrampette, that reacts to the spectral interactions within the sound space.

In its first version, Polyphono was installed in the Water Tower (Copa de Agua) of Quinta Bella, Recoleta, as part of the Espacios Resonantes Festival.
